Gerson Digital : Sweden

RKD STUDIES

Note to the Reader

To illustrate and annotate this new scholarly edition of Gerson’s chapter on Sweden we started with an analysis of the artists, art dealers and collectors mentioned in the text, entering or supplementing information on them in RKDartists. Altogether, information has been gathered here on 362 artists, art dealers and collectors. As part of the project, all the works of art mentioned in Gerson’s chapter on Sweden have been made visually accessible through RKDimages; we have also included references to additional works that we regard as relevant to the understanding of Gerson’s text or to the subject. As a result, the information provided in the new or updated records reflect the current state of scholarship. In the RKDimages database there are now more than 900 paintings, drawings and prints that relate to the Swedish project.

The information in the databases forms the foundation for the annotated and illustrated Gerson text. The illustrations and captions of the artworks are directly retrieved from RKDimages and displayed in the digital publication; conversely, a mouse click on an image leads the reader to the corresponding entry in RKDimages. The names of artists and collectors are provided with hyperlinks leading to the relevant records in RKDartists, where literature and further information can be found. Therefore, the information in the databases functions as an extension of the documentary apparatus of the publication. To avoid redundancy, literature that can be found in the database is not repeated in the notes.

Two kinds of notes are found in the translated Gerson text: notes by Gerson himself as they occur in the German text of 1942/1983, which are flagged by [Gerson 1942/1983], and ones preceded by [Van Leeuwen/Roding 2024]. The literature for both kinds of notes is standardized and abbreviated. All the abbreviations may be found in the bibliography. This digital publication does not feature page numbers. To quote from this publication, we suggest references to its section numbers (see also Colophon).
